— When the price of potatoes falls, the consumer is effectively wealthier (he can afford to purchase more generally), and so he buys fewer potatoes.

— In the UMP, the consumer chooses a consumption bundle in the Walrasian budget set to maximize his utility level.
— The EMP is "dual" to the UMP. It captures the same aim of efficient use of the consumer's purchasing power while reversing the roles of objective function and constraint.

— free-disposal condition
— The property of free disposal holds if the absorption of any additional amounts of inputs without any reduction in inputs is always possible.
— The interpretation is that the extra amount of inputs (or outputs) can be disposed of or eliminated at no cost.

— Often, this constraint is described in the literature as requiring that the cost of planned purchases not exceed the consumer's income.
— This economic-affordability constraint, when combined with the requirement that x lie in the consumption set RL+, implies that the set of feasible consumption bundles consists of the elements of the set.
— But the weak axiom imposes no restriction on where we place the new consumption bundle as the demand for good 1 falls.
е. — The resource constraint is one of lifetime income (i.e., wealth).

allocative efficiency
Whether those and only those products or services are provided to consumers which they value at least as much as the (marginal) cost that the company had to incur during the production process v. Allocative efficiency theory says that the distribution of resources between alternatives does not fit with consumer taste (perceptions of costs and benefits). For example, a company may have the lowest costs in "productive" terms, but the result may be inefficient in allocative terms because the "true" or social cost exceeds the price that consumers are willing to pay for an extra unit of the product. This is true, for example, if the firm produces pollution (an external cost). Consumers would prefer that the firm and its competitors produce less of the product and charge a higher price, to internalize the external cost.
